Hakuba is a great place to visit even in the non-skiing season. Those everpresent mountains provide for wonderful nature-based outdoor activities. The most popular and the cheapest is mountain hiking. There are numerous trails ranging from short boardwalks through spring flower fields up to multi-day treks staying in either tents or mountain huts. Check out our day hikes page and our overnight hikes page for more information on some great hikes you can do.
Hakuba is also famous for other activities such as rafting, paragliding, mountain bike riding and rock climbing just to name a few. Not to mention canyoning, kayaking or canoeing.
Big mountains mean big rivers and Hakuba is one of the best places for rafting in Japan. There is no feeling like coming out of a thrilling rapid, into a calm slow drift down the river, all the while being mesmerized by the tremendous mountain and forest scenery. If river rafting is not quite your thing, you can always go canoeing or kayaking on one of the 3 lakes very close to Hakuba.
Bike riding is also very popular. You can follow the meandering Himegawa river, take a leisurely ride through some of the older villages nearby Hakuba or do a circuit of the picturesque Lake Aokiko. We rent mountain bikes so you don't have far to go. You can also do some harder trails by taking a gondola to the top of one of the ski resorts and let loose on a steep, exhiliarating downhill.
Whatever it is you wish to do, be assured that when you get back to your home at Mt Hakuba Backpackers you'll be able to relax in comfortable surroundings, with all the amenities and conveniences that you are used to at home.
